The morning after Officer Lopez’s visit, Cammie fed Pumpkin, dressed both of them for the day and then tiptoed out of the bedroom. She found Mrs. Hampton in the kitchen stirring up a batch of her delicious apple muffins. After a few pleasantries, Cammie shifted the baby in her arms and said, “Am I the first one up?”

Mrs. Hampton shook her head. “Mr. Rhodes went out for an early run. Miss Ainsley is sleeping in. May I fix you something?”

Relief flooded Cammie’s veins. Drake was not happy with her, so she was in no hurry to see him. “Nothing for me, thanks. I have an appointment this morning. I’ll drive through somewhere on the way.”

“And you’re taking the baby?”

Cammie didn’t know if the odd note in the housekeeper’s voice indicated surprise or disapproval. “I am. It won’t be a problem. If you don’t mind, please tell Drake and Ainsley that I’ll be back sometime this afternoon.”

“Of course.” The housekeeper pointed at the nearby counter. “I still take the newspaper every day...brought my copy with me. They ran that article about your little man.”

Despite the fact that Cammie was in a hurry and really didn’t want to bump into Drake, she couldn’t resist picking up the paper. She scanned the three columns. Sierra Morgan had done an excellent job. The story was compelling and heartfelt without sensationalizing Pumpkin’s plight.

“It’s good, isn’t it?” The housekeeper shot Cammie a glance over her shoulder, waiting for an answer.

Cammie tossed the paper aside with a sigh of relief. “It is. It really is. Hopefully, we’ll see progress soon.”

Forty-five minutes later, she sat in a nondescript exam room and felt her heart race. This was the only time she had taken the baby out of the house and into the world. Getting him situated in the car seat hadn’t been a problem. But perhaps bringing him with her had been a mistake.

This was her second recent visit to the gynecologist. The first had been for testing. Today she was going to find out the results.

When Dr. Nash walked in, Cammie took a deep breath. The other woman was in her late fifties, calm, experienced. And her manner was kind. Cammie needed that.

The ob-gyn pulled up a stool and raised an eyebrow. “Whose baby do you have?”

Cammie flushed, feeling guilty for no apparent reason. “I’m fostering him for a brief time. He was abandoned.”

“Is he the one in the newspaper this morning? I read that story. Incredible that they still haven’t found the parents.”

“I agree. We’re calling him Pumpkin. I worry that being separated from his mother at this young age may do him harm.”

The doctor shook her head. “If he and his mama are reunited soon, he should be fine.”

“I hope so.”

The doctor carried a paper chart in her hand. She flipped it open, scanned the contents and smiled. “I’m confused,” she said. “You’re young. You have no apparent medical problems. You’re heterosexual. Why do you want to try artificial insemination?”

Cammie clutched Pumpkin, glad to have a shield.
